Gavin Watson was born in London in 1965 and grew up on a housing estate in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. During his early teens he bought an instamatic camera from Woolworths and became obsessed with photography. Leaving school at age sixteen, Watson moved back to London and joined a news agency as a darkroom assistant. He continued to photograph his younger brother Neville and their group of punk and skinhead friends, documenting these youth subcultures from a unique personal perspective and amassing an unparalleled photographic archive of British life in the 1980s.
